The surah “Yusuf” is known as the “Grand Story” in the Quran. The story of Joseph, its Biblical counterpart, spans 11 chapters of Genesis and is sometimes referred to as the Bible’s “novella.”
This is an ongoing study seminar which examines the remarkable similarities and differences between these two accounts of the same person, family, and story. The texts are laid out, verse by verse, staggered to show matching and missing content. We use Richard Elliott Friedman’s excellent text, “The Bible with Sources Revealed,” as the foundational Biblical source. Students are encouraged to come with their own translations.
The seminar meets bi-weekly until the text is complete, which should take several classes.
