SUMMARY:Diving Deeply: The Wonderful Birch
DESCRIPTION:In this series\, we will examine the Russian/Finnish story\, “The Wonderful Birch.” This is a story with challenging variations on the Cinderella classic\, including shapeshifting\, murder\, and wise women. \nThe cost is $45\, and you can register here. \nThe Diving Deeply series invites participants to explore stories with rich metaphor and mystery\, seeking meanings below the surface that often affect the listener – and the storyteller – without their awareness. Participants dissect the stories\, their symbols and metaphors\, and uncover both the first set of meanings that seem to present themselves and then consider alternative tellings and impacts. \nA limited number of scholarships are available upon request. Likewise\, those who can afford more to help subsidize those who can’t are encouraged to do so. \nThis is truly a unique experience to dive deeply into these mystical depths.

SUMMARY:Challenging Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Challenging Journeys:\nA Romani and a Jewish Tale\nWhat could connect a magical story of Jewish mysticism and a story from oral folklore shared by a Romani woman in 1940s Hungary? For one thing\, they both transport us to unlikely and unforgettable settings and dimensions\, inviting us to leave our comfort zone\, and come back transformed – perhaps seeing the world with different eyes.   \nJoin us for this two-hour online workshop with Maja Bumberák and Jim Brulé. Join us on a journey where you can immerse yourself in storytelling – and in a discussion following each story. Your reflections\, personal sharings\, thoughts\, and questions generated by the story will be a valuable addition to the program\, which will be both interactive and – we trust – provoke growth and inspiration in us all! \n— \nMaja Bumberák is a renowned storyteller\, singer\, and educator based in Budapest\, Hungary. She tours the world\, sharing stories and songs from Hungarian folklore and other cultures\, in Hungarian and English. She also applies and leads story work in various group processes\, where self-awareness and the community- and bridge-building role of stories is emphasized. She was a scholarship holder of the Hungarian Academy of Arts from 2018-2022. She researches the oral tradition of Hungarian storytelling and conducts training in oral storytelling for teachers\, student teachers\, and other professionals. She believes stories can heal a community in a way nothing else can. Maja brings knowledge of stories from traditional Hungarian oral folklore and their cultural background.   \nMaja brings knowledge of stories from traditional Hungarian oral folklore and their cultural background.   \nJim Brulé is a storyteller\, teacher\, coach\, and organizational consultant whose experience spans several decades. As a transformational storyteller\, he creates opportunities for spiritual growth and transformation through encounters with stories\, whether in performances\, classes\, or individual guidance. He also serves as an interfaith chaplain in hospitals\, jails\, and psychiatric facilities\, and is active as a “death doula.” \nJim serves on the board as President of Northeast Storytelling and has delivered programs to storytelling organizations around the world. He teaches digital storytelling at the university level\, and has crafted training programs in leadership\, collaboration\, and issues of implicit bias for commercial\, non-profit\, and religious institutions.

SUMMARY:The Rose and the Musician
DESCRIPTION:The Rose and the Musician\nDiving Deeply into Stories\nNarratives possess multiple layers of meaning hidden beneath their facade. These interpretations evolve with every narration and every audience. As interpretations change\, so do the tales. \nJoin us for this two-hour online workshop with Maja Bumberák and Jim Brulé. We will begin with a story presented by Maja: a mystical account sourced from a Roma narrator in the latter half of the 19th century. Following the telling\, we’ll journey through the tale’s universe\, discussing its impact and the ways it touched\, inspired\, or stirred us. We and the story will ask questions of each other and see what answers might arrive. \nThe “Diving Deeply” series encourages attendees to immerse themselves in tales rich in metaphor and mystery. They’ll probe beneath the obvious\, uncovering the subtle messages that might escape a casual listener. Attendees will deeply engage with the narratives\, finding resonance in their imagery. \n— \nMaja Bumberák is a renowned storyteller\, singer\, and educator based in Budapest\, Hungary. SUMMARY:Maggidut: Becoming an Inspirational Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.\nMaggidut is the art of inspirational\, spiritual storytelling. Maggid Jim Brulé will guide us on this spiritual and practical journey as we develop an understanding of how stories—when told with an open heart—can heal wounds\, inspire the spirit\, and transform lives. Drawing from his two-year curriculum for maggidut\, this class will integrate oral storytelling\, healing\, Jewish folklore\, and meditation in a highly interactive group process. \nTelling stories in this way requires openness and intentionality in all four worlds. We will explore the neuroscience of telling and receiving these stories\, and the associated physical storytelling techniques; we will appreciate and experience the emotional impact of encountering these stories; our minds will be challenged to consider alternate meanings of the same story; and our spirits will be lifted as we invite the Divine to live in these encounters. \nPart of Aleph’s Kallah program.
